A View From The Road – Vol. 5, Num. 4 – The Wainhouse Research Collaboration Summit 2011

Observations on technology trends from the latest conferences and seminars.

July 24, 2011

Greetings from the City of Brotherly Love.  Wainhouse Research held their annual Collaboration Summit from Philadelphia for the first time.  The conference was well attended, with a large number of industry veterans mixed in with a significant number of interested locals as well.

The event covered the worlds of video conferencing and telepresence, audio conferencing, unified communications, collaboration and media technology in education.  The presentations were given by a mix of industry analysts, manufacturers and end users.  This View From The Road is intentionally brief, as again this year Wainhouse Research with the assistance of York Telecom has graciously made all of the presentations (PowerPoints and streaming video) available for free on demand.   If you just want the agenda and slides you can go here (www.wainhouse.com/philly2011presos)   For the streaming video with the presentations Wainhouse is still working on a landing page that will take you to each individual speaker (I’ll update this page when available) but for now they are available in groups  - Day 1 part 1 (http://tinyurl.com/Wainhouse2011pt1) , Day 1 part 2 (http://tinyurl.com/Wainhouse2011pt2), and Day 2 (http://tinyurl.com/Wainhouse2011pt3).   Below are some highlights.

The event opened again with Andrew Davis’ state of the industry presentation – identifying and analyzing trends.  He has isolated what he referred to as the “Eight Collaboration Market Drivers” shown below.

Andrew said the industry is at a turning point, with large enterprises beginning to recognize that the drivers for collaboration are shifting away from travel avoidance savings and onto things like productivity increases, faster decision making, shorter time to market, etc.  He also said we will continue to see the boundary between “voice” and “video” disappear.

The other Wainhouse Research Analysts at the event also gave clear and compelling presentations, with some examples including Alan Greenberg talking about how “Shift Happens” in the educational world, and Brent Kelly speaking on the state of Unified Communications.

There were a number of end user presentations, which included Ismayeel Syed,  the Technical Architect at Aviva describing how he developed a successful collaboration model at his organization from the “bottom-up” instead of the typical “top-down – get the executives first.”

And finally, there were presentations from and exhibits by a number of manufacturers, highlights including:

  • Magor Communications showing a low cost, global, SVC based deployment
  • AGT showing their Encore Mobility platform
  • York Telecom announcing themselves as “the industry’s best kept secret”
  • Compunetix showing their Evergreen media conferencing platform
  • AVI-SPL showing their suite of collaboration solutions including Cameleon
  • Radvision showing their suite of endpoints and Scopia bridge

I encourage everyone to follow the links above and experience the presentations for themselves.

~~~~~~
That’s it for this edition of A View From The Road.  Look for the next report later in the year as there are still a number of technology conferences I’m looking at attending before 2012 starts with the Consumer Electronics Show.
